What a week for Such Music and Low:r. Our release Ebb N Flow climbed the Beatport charts to #13 in the Drum and Bass releases and #85 in Beatport overall.
Thank you for all the support and BIG UPs to the man Low:r for creating an amazing EP. #MoreToCome
Fabric nightclub permanently lost there licenses at the hands of the Islington Counsel (the bureaucrats in charge of the area Fabric is located.) As London has lost so many music venues (over 50% of clubs, 40% live music venues) it really wasn’t a surprise. But Fabric is arguably the most famous club in the world. Music lovers need to fight back, i’m not sure how, but we must. Music is culture, fuck developing unaffordable real estate for the 1%. When are the powers that be going to do something for everyone else? Never. So lets make them, don’t they work for us?

Hi Guys,
Make sure to sign this petition asking the powers that be not to close the legendary London night club Fabric.
Closing this club will only drive the night life underground where it is more dangerous. It’s impossible to control everyone’s actions. When someone dies at a concert, do you close the venue?
We are getting the ball rolling for one of our biggest releases to date “Ebb N Flow” by Low:r. Low:r, formally known as Morah has put together a brilliant 5 track EP. Watch out for our weekly preview release leading up to the Beatport Exclusive release September 28th.

Happy Holidays!!!
As 2014 comes to a close, Such Music will not have another release until early January 2015. SUCH009 will feature an incredible 4 track EP for myself, 4Everest called “Be Faithful.” I’ve spent a ton of time on these track and I’m really happy with the outcome.
After that we will see the return of Stickbubbly. Just this week Mr Bubbly sent me a track that is so beautiful I had to have it. Such Music is lucky enough to secure this track and another completing an awesome two track single from the man. YES!
From there I’m working on bringing in a new person to help manage our Youtube channel. This is still in the works but I have a good feeling about it.
I’m really looking forward to expanding our catalog and continue providing the best in Drum and Bass through 2015 and beyond.
Thanks for the support!

2014 has been one of the best years ever for drum and bass albums. We’ve seen the likes of Utah Jazz, Technimatic, Tokyo Prose, Logistic, Ulterior Motive, Spy, Wilkinson, etc, etc (just to name a few.)

Life has been very different over the past few months. Mainly with the adjustment of becoming a dad, I’ve been finding it harder to maintain all aspect of my life. From trying to stay healthy, be a good husband, a good father, provide for them, keep up with the label, produce my own music and my full time job is difficult. However, i’m in it for the long run, which means for life.
One thing my dad always said is, life is peaks and Valleys, hang in there (I’m talking to myself).

This is an incredible mix by Mr Utah Jazz — not to mention the amazing intro track! It’s from Utah’s new album “Portfolio” and the track is called “Neckless.” I have to give this extra shout out here because the track is a collaboration between Utah Jazz and myself, Such Music’s 4Everest. Portfolio is also an amazing album, watch for it to drop July 21st on Spearhead Records!

So Youtube has announced it will force indie labels to sign a licensing agreement for their new premium subscription service. If indies do not sign the agreement, their videos will be blocked from Youtube. Umm, how bout a fuck you Youtube? You are partly who you are because of indie labels! Is the future of music purely subscription sites? Yes, some are great services, but their is no money in it for artists or labels (unless you are one of the four majors, Warner,Sony,Universal, EMI.) I see where this is going. The industry can’t figure out a profitable business plan for the digital age. This is just another way for the corporate world to cheat and steal from everyone who isn’t a major share holder. Music needs to have value and it should. There is nothing that can make you feel the way music does — give you goose bumps, make you sweat, feel free, dance, laugh, cry, love, give you energy and even just make you feel as though you’re floating away into the beauty of the track. Ok, I’m ranting a bit here, but you get the point. Buy music! Use these services but find music you like and buy it! And Youtube, if you really start removing these labels videos, we’re done.

So it was announced this week that Apple is buying Beats By Dre. My first thought was huh? Why the fuck would Apple buy this shitty head phone company for 3.2 BILLION dollars. Well, I think I found the answer: A leaked document showing Beats by Dre’s music subscription royalty payouts. As little as artists get payed in a streaming service, it seems Dre has cut that price down significantly. Dre’s Beats pays a whopping 0.000126 per play. At least Spotify pays a generous $0.006 to $0.0084 (maybe) per stream.
Out of all the digital resellers, iTunes at least payed about 50% to the rights holders of a sale. Could they be moving towards a subscription based system? I think so. As great as some of these subscription services are, artists cannot survive from these payout plans. If you use these services and like what you’re listening to, go and buy that music. If you can buy it direct from the artist great, if not try iTunes… I guess?

Really happy to see some love from Digital Tunes giving our latest release a staff pick. Digital tunes is a great site to buy electronic music. It offers the download of uncompressed (wav) files for the same price of an MP3. Most stores charge you about 50% more for this feature. Big up yourself Digital Tunes and thanks for the support!
Everyone is posting this article from Bazzfeed about Eric Prydz suing thousands of artists over the use of his infamous snare drum. Well, umm, of course this is a joke but not many people are aware of this. Within music, copyright law really only affects two things, melodies and lyrics. Drums cannot be copywritten. If they could be, guess who would be the richest mother fuckers in the world?
Never heard of this drum loop? Watch this short documentary:

Check out this great Toronto producer mix from dj Love Hz featuring 3 tracks from the Such Music catalog. Lots of amazing talent coming from my home city of Toronto.
August Brown posted a piece this morning on the LA Times Music blog, with some background and op ed on Beatport and its Beatport Awards – taking place tomorrow.
It’s an interesting read, especially the bit about SFX Entertainment buying Beatport last year, firing much of its original engineering team and closing the San Fran office in a “bloodbath.” Oh, and that in SFX Entertainment’s first foray into lifting Beatport into “mainstream relevance” the site lost $1 million in the third quarter of its 2013 fiscal year.
Without getting into a debate about the pluses and minuses of EDM’s steady climb up the pop-music ladder, as a record label selling music on Beatport, of course we want the site to do well. We want Beatport to raise its status and become a driving force, selling dance music not just to longtime fans and professionals in the “scene” but to those who, as of right now, are “into” electronic music but buy exclusively on iTunes, listen on Spotify, and ask, “Beatport what?”
In Brown’s article he explains that the Beatport Awards should be looked at as a more relevant and legitimate alternative to the Grammy’s EDM nominations. He’s right there. And we like that fans have a say and get to vote for their favourite songs and artists for the awards.
Beatport is aware of EDM’s “tribal” element, which is quite unlike the rest of music in that genres and sub-genres of EDM each have their own “tribes.” Sometimes though (and maybe too often) you can swap out the word “tribes” and replace it with “cliques.” What happens then? The Beatport Awards move further away from being an authentic judge of the year’s best in electronic music, and dangerously close to becoming a popularity contest. Then trend kicks artistic merit to the curb. What do you think?

You know how we feel about subscription music sites likeSpotify and Pandora, well, Beats Music launched today — Dr Dre‘s answer to the music subscription business. Beats Music is positioning itself as “artist friendly.” Not sure what that means yet, and there’s nothing in the article about how they will pay their artists. Anyone here more familiar with their business model? Do you think the world needs another subscription music service? We’d like to hear!

We’ve got some exciting news coming out of the Such Music camp. We just signed two amazing tracks from Brazilian producer “Duoscience“. More details to come. WATCH THIS SPACE!
Duoscience has huge releases on many labels including: Liquid V, GoodLooking, Chronic Records, Fokuz Recordings, LuvDisaster,Soul Deep, Influenzia, among others.
We are pumped to have him on the Such Music team!

Deadmau5 has deleted his Soundcloud account with 33 million listens. I can’t say I blame him as Soundcloud still hasn’t finished their update from two years ago. I’ve sent multiple complaints to Soundcloud about this . They give me ridiculous replies like,” We are making sure compatibility is the same for each user” and “Please be patient”. So you’re saying it’s ok to take 2 years to do a software update? I can’t believe they’re getting away with this. Maybe it’s because they have no major competitor? Well, wait one second, rumor has it Deadmau5 is starting a private subscription music site. Could this be part of his master plan? I think so… But still, Soundcloud sucks (even though I still use it cause there’s nothing else 😉

It looks like subscription base music site, Rdio, is making some moves. They’ve added their service to 20 more countries for a total of 51 countries. This looks great for the industry, but no one seems to be talking about what their artist will get paid? Isn’t that important? Don’t they make the music people are streaming? Rido makes a nice statement here, but gives no figures. From what I’ve read they pay a similar amount as Spotify (.030 -.001 of a cent USD per play). I guess my point is, how can artists make money from these types of services. I don’t know?
What do you think?

Here is another subscription based music site looking to take over Spotify’s paid subscribers. Personally I’m not sold on the whole Spotify/Pandora business plan and I don’t think those companies are either (considering they are not making money, just raising capital.) We’ll see, but for me the bottom line is this: Can an artist make decent royalties from these subscription sites? The answer, when it comes to Spotify and Deezer is NO (avg royalty rate per stream 0.001 -0.0030)!

Recently the infamous DJ Mag Top 100 DJ ranking came out. There has been a lot of negative feedback and rightly so. What a bunch of BS. First off, there are other genres besides commercial house and trance. Not one DnB, HipHop or Breaks Dj is on the list. I’m sorry, but if Andy C isn’t on a DJ top 100 list, it is invalid. And seriously, who the fuck is Hardwell? I’m sure he’s a nice guy but is he really the best DJ in the world? To me his music sounds like one long song, so typical I feel like having a cold shower and crying in the corner.
The old Dj Mag Top 100 lists went through artists in all genres. It included Djs like Micky Finn, Dj Hype, Dj Premiere and Dj Jazzy Jeff.
I came across this blog post from UK artist Bodyjack. He found the very first DJ Mag Top 100 and posted it. I say it’s still more relevant than any recent DJ Mag Top 100 list. Check it HERE.
I find it lazy on the part of DJ Mag to only include Djs from the House and Trance scenes. It also speaks loud and clear to readers that the magazine is not so much a supporter of Djs across the board and more a supporter of those Djs that play the most commercial shows, bringing in bigger dollars. Why? Maybe so those Djs and the shows hosting them will advertise or continue to. That in itself speaks volumes to the way all media is being dictated these days. But that’s a whole other topic!
I don’t like to get political , but Russell Brands recent interview on the BBC is amazing. He speaks the truth. If you can’t see it, you’re part of the problem.
Time for a change.

Well, sorry anyone who has or will put out an album in 2013. Frederic Robinson has crushed your hope for Album of the Year with his album called “Mixed Signals.”
Let’s look at his first track called “Theme Park.” This track gives you a great idea of the clever madness that is Frederic Robinson.
“Theme Park” is a perfect name to describe this tune as listening to it has my senses going 500mph. How Robinson blends SO many elements is mind blowing! Still, it all fits together perfectly.
Then there’s this beautiful track, ” Vamp Till Ready.” So fucking original! You never know what’s around the corner.
I love how Robinson mixes really organic sounds with all types of electronic elements. Hello “Particles.” Nice to meet you!
Ok last one and then you MUST go buy this album. Shit gets deep with “Bloom feat. Stray.” Such a creative piece of music. How they use the vocal sample throughout the track is perfect. So much is happening but it sounds so fluid. This is extremely hard to pull off — and I’m not talking about lame Complextro or whatever it’s called lol.
All in all I think I have to give this album 9.5/10. This is someone doing there own thing and fucking nailing it. I haven’t heard something so original and fresh in Electronic music in a long time. I see big things for Mr. Robinson in the near future, but no rush (he’s only twenty one).

The man, legend and crazy mother fucker, Henry Rollins, weighs in on his thoughts about the current state of music (see below). I agree with most of it, but I think he’s a but biased towards the music he loves (which most of us are.) We can all speak about the music we grew up to as being the best. For me, nothing will beat the early days of Jungle/DnB. It was raw, honest and full of energy. But to be honest, I find that Drum and Bass still holds a lot of those early components. DnB has always stuck to itself. We’ve made our own industry inside “The Industry“. The DnB industry has its good and bad (like everything else), but it has alway kept the scene honest (mainly because the heads wont have it any other way). I’m proud to be a part of the DnB community and proud of the good times and bad times. The one thing that DnB has always proven is that it doesn’t give up. Who knows, maybe that’s where the term “Junglist Soldier” came from?

Producers Gridlock and Prolix have started a kick starter campaign for their new album collaboration called “Project Trendkill.” They hope to finance the Vinyl release of the album asking for $5000 USD by October 31th. Kickstarter is an amazing resource that benefits the artist and not just the machine.

Drum and Bass Legend, Teebee, just released a massive artist compilation album called Sine Language on his label Subtitles. Sine Language is deep, hard and heavy and what would be expected from Subtitles. I was really impressed how many great songs are on this 26 track Album. I guess when you’ve been in the biz for that long, artists know how to give you the goods. Here are a few of my highlights from the album.
Break (obviously lol) – End Of Time. Standard heavy thick drums with that dirty style rolling bass. Just how Break does it best.
Seba – Under the Sun. Classic Seba atmospheric sound with that warm bass. Goes deep.
Calyx and Teebee – Human Reptile (Calyx and Teebee remix). Like holyshit, is the future here or what? Crazy production I like listening to wondering “how they do that.” haha.
And a quick snippet of Teebee mixing the track down.

Chase & Status are getting ready to release their third album “Brand New Machine.” The track “Count On Me” is dripping with old-school vibes.
They’ve done a few tracks in the past with an older hardcore style. One of my favorites is “Blind Faith.” The track is amazing but the video is brilliant. It captures the 90’s rave essence really well. It brought me back to a few old memories of the early days. Hmm, I think soon it will be time for another “Cradle to the Rave.”

Let’s fast-forward a few years from my last “Cradle to the rave” post to April 11th 1998, the first Canadian AWOL event.
In case you don’t already know, AWOL is a very famous collective of Drum and Bass/Jungle legends consisting of:
AWOL is also a promotion group, mainly run by Mickey Finn and Darren Jay. People familiar with the early DnB/Jungle scene will always associate AWOL with a famous audiocassette tape. The tape seems to have the loudest crowd ever recorded on any rave tape I’ve ever heard. Some people think its a real crowd, some think they put mics over the crowd to amplify them, but many people also say they placed a fake crowd in the background of the tape. I had a conversation with Darren Jay about this and he said the tape was real though. Anyways..I don’t have the audio and can’t find it online but will post it if I do!
Now, back to April 11, 1998.
My friend Bowen drove a group of us to this rave, which was being held at the Docks (Sound Academy, 11 Polson). We were really pumped for the line up. Ellis Dee was a famous Dj that we hadn’t seen before. Shy FX and Fearless were already legends to us by this time. There was also a newer MC that we had been hearing on UK rave tapes called Skibadee, and we couldn’t wait to see him live.
This night was a little different for me as I was the only one with a fake ID and spent a few hours drinking at the bar. Right above the bar was the DJ booth, so I had a great view. The music was amazing that night and so was the vibe. I remember Shy FX dropping his track Bambatta that night. Wow! That track really had a strong influence on DnB. It was so simple but so different and amazing to party to.
Once the bar closed they opened the area up to everyone. Bowen came up and we started partying and chatting with a couple girls. This one girl I’d been chatting with I’d seen before at raves. She was super hot and we always bumped into each other at these parties. The group of us were partying and feeling good. Eventually Bowen started making out with one of the girls. He stopped and looked at me and the other girl and told us to kiss… So what do I do? I just remember moving in to kiss her and then bursting out laughing right in her face. Fuck I was an idiot! I don’t know why I did this but needless to say she wasn’t impressed with my reaction and took off. At the time I didn’t really care that much though because I had a girlfriend (oops). But I do remember thinking, damn, maybe this girl really wanted me? I thought she was totally out of my league. Oh well, back to raving!
We all had an amazing time that night at AWOL. We decided to leave around 8 a.m. When we walked out of the club the sun was shining and it was beautiful out. We started walking to Bowen’s car and BANG! We hear a fucking massive explosion. We looked around and couldn’t see anything and were thinking did we just hear that? Eventually we got in the car and started heading home. We were driving for about two minutes and suddenly we saw what looked like a war zone. Smoke and shit was everywhere. I remember looking out the window and seeing massive chunks of concrete lying on the ground. What had happened? They demolished a building about 5mins before. It was awesome. What a proper way to end our first AWOL!
Ps – That sunday, Shy Fx, Skibadee and Fearless preformed on the Prophecy 89.5 Marcus’s famous weekly sunday radio show. This set and MCing became legendary.

With so many question about making a living in the current music biz, it’s nice to see vinyl sales are up around 30% so far in 2013. Any news of an increase in sales is good for the industry. I guess the question is are any of these sales from dance music records? I fear they are not. Most of the recent boost in vinyl sales are coming from great marketing, packaging and consumers who want to hold a physical product. Back in the day mostly DJ’s would buy dance music (House, techno, DnB etc) vinyl. Now the majority of DJ’s use CDJs, Serato, some other form of controller, or even worse, pressing play in Ableton (lazy bastards). We are seeing less labels releasing vinyl because they are not selling. Check out DJ Hypes interview about his label Playaz choice to stop selling vinyl.
Some people probably think it’s strange I’m always talking about vinyl yet Such Music is a digital only label. First, stop being a prick and judging me (lol). Second is, one of my favorite hobbies is vinyl shopping. Before CDJ’s, going to the local record shop and checking out all the new DnB releases was the best. I would rush home and spin for hours. Also, buying old vinyl for listening and sampling is a love of mine still to this day.
I see Such Music releasing vinyl in the future, maybe once a year or every release (depending on how things go). I think the bottom line is, if you love music, buy it!
Few other article about Vinyl Sales:
PS, I don’t even want to start on the whole subscription based sites (Pandora, Spotify) debate. I’ll save that for another day.

So I’m going to start posting some music production tips on here. My plan is to post quick simple tips from multiple producers on multiple DAW’s and also include some from myself.
Here’s production tip #1 coming from yours truly:
Logic’s Marquee Tool
In logic, beside the cursor, I use the marquee tool the most. It has multiple functions all related to selecting (Audio, Midi, Automation etc). I use the marquee tool a lot when arranging. You can roll out an entire track and then use the tool to start muting, deleting or copying. Next thing you know your track has turned into a full arrangement. Another great thing about the marquee tool is the ability to highlight full sections of your track and mute them. This is great for creative edits or simplified workflows.
I was going to put a bunch of screenshots up, but this YouTube video covers most of it.
Big ups!

I just saw this post from London Elektricity on “36 Things Vinyl Collectors Love“.

And let me tell you, there is a shit load of vinyl in Los Angeles. The cool thing is, when i’m digging for records, 50% of them were made around the corner from where I live (Studio City).

It has been almost 3 years since Logic 9 was released and I was wondering if Apple was even planning to continue with the Pro Audio consumer. My worries stem from the release of Final Cut X which confirmed Apple was getting out of the pro NLE business. Regardless, the initial reviews of Logic X sound pretty good. The overall look has changed to be in line with the new OSX style and there seems to be many new features and instruments. Since I haven’t actually used the software and probably won’t for a while (I’ll need to update my OS from 10.6.8 to 10.8.4 and that is a pain). Check out some reviews below. So far the only negative thing about the update I can find is it only allows 64 bit plugins. But 32bit is old software and ALL plugin designers should have 64bit plugin by now.
Video of the new Drum Track feature.
Let me know if anyone is updating soon and wants to do a review.

The same week we released our much-anticipated track “Love Me” by Stickbubbly, Technimatic released their Intersection EP on SGN:LTD. I’ve been really liking what these guys have been putting out over the past couple years. Their production quality is next level and these guys never miss putting plenty of emotion into each of their tracks. They mix a perfect blend of soulful samples with hard hitting drums and deep bass. Love it!
Here’s a couple of my favorite tracks from the release. Check it out and buy it here

There are a lot of music production tutorials all over YouTube. I recently came across a great tutorial from LSB on the making of his track “Overthinking.” I blogged about this track previously and wanted to mention the tutorial as well.
This tutorial is different than a lot of other dance music tutorial’s out there. LSB focuses more on the art of sampling instead of “how to make a phat snare drum” for example. I haven’t come across a lot of videos that give you some idea of how to be creative with samples. From experience, I’ve always found it exciting when you find that one sample you can build a whole track from. One thing I’ve always found frustrating about sampling is keeping things in tune. When you time stretch a sample, generally you will affect its pitch. LSB briefly mentions micro tuning samples (which is a must in many cases). But tuning can get crazy when you find only one section/note of the sample is out of tune.
This brings up an interesting topic on acoustic music (played instruments, guitar, piano, bass etc.) vs. electronic music. Electronic music is pretty much absent of one human element — the element of imperfection. Digital music is perfectly on time and in tune, whereas back in the day instruments could be slightly out of tune. Also, musicians could be off time and even recording process (2 inch tape etc.) would affect things like tempo and pitch. It’s not really an argument I care to get into as I love both forms of music equally, but I’m sure many people would argue to the death that one form is better than the other.
Getting back to sampling though, the point I’m trying to make is that if you can’t find the right note to follow a sample, you will most likely need to tune the sample. Don’t be afraid to tune the sample instead of always trying to find a note that will fit it.
Check out this tutorial and get creative! I find a lot of the demo’s I’m sent are missing something important – creativity.

Sept 20th 1997- Syrous 4-year anniversary “Reinforced”
I’d been raving for a solid year and the biggest Jungle/DnB DJ of that time was Mickey Finn. He had yet to make it to Toronto after multiple attempts trying to get into the country. The rumors about this party were that he would actually make in to Toronto this time and the rumors turned out to be right.
So how did I get to the rave that night? I didn’t get my driver’s licensee until I was 19, but this did not stop me from driving. I took an auto mechanic class in high school and used to bring my Mom’s car into the shop for minor repairs. These repairs would take a day, but I would tell my parents the car was needed for a week. This gave me access to a car for days. Yes, I’m a genius!
My parents happened to be going away the weekend of this rave and the car was already in the shop (or parked around the corner) lol! “Bye Mommy and Daddy, I’ll be a good boy.” They left for the weekend and the plan was in action. I didn’t want to drive from Oakville to Toronto as I had no license and really didn’t know how to drive very well. I asked a friend (Lana) to drive. That Saturday we piled into the 4-door Honda civic hatchback (one person in the open trunk) and headed downtown. The party was at PRM (Koolhouse). We parked under the highway with a few other cars and entered the complex.
This rave was massive, 3000 plus people. The vibe was intense and the venue was packed. When Mickey Finn came on, I’d never heard a crowd yell, scream, whistle and horn blow so loud.
There is a recording of Mickeys set and it sounds pretty awesome. One thing I’ll never forget is being overwhelmed by everything and retreating by myself to the back of the venue. I stood against the wall and tried not to go into system overload. A security guard came up to me and asked if I was all right. I told him I was overwhelmed and he just started shooting the shit with me and it totally calmed me down. Thanks security dude! You’re a good man and that is rare in your line of work.
Around 7am we left the rave and went to find the car. It took a bit to find it and we all noticed no cars were parking under the highway. We turned a corner and there it was, the only car in a highly illegal parking spot. Wow, we were fucking lucky. We got home with out issue and slept the rest of the Sunday until school Monday morning.
This was one crazy night. Mickey Finn’s set was epic and MC GQ rocked the crowd. I knew then this would always be a night to remember.

I just saw a post from Bailey about a company called Producer Factory. At first I thought it was a joke, but it looks real. Get this shit: You buy a track from the site and brand it as your own:
Producer Factory website
“Producer Factory is a newly developed idea that allows you to purchase any tracks on this site exclusively, and sell it as your own. Create a new professional image or just rise above the rest with our high quality productions by well-known artists. We offer nothing less than the best and assure your fans approval.”
Are you fucking kidding me? Isn’t the world filled with too many phonies already? If you want to make music, make it, learn your craft and make whatever’s inside you. Lazy sacks!
I’m thinking out loud here… So if you buy a track from PF and someone asks you if you made the track, do you lie? Yes you own the rights but you did not make it. And what if you sign that track to a label and state its your’s, and then the label asks for the parts to do a remix? Good luck!
I’m kind of interested in speaking to someone who has or would sign up for this service. If you know anyone, pass them my way. I’d love to interview him/her. Who knows, maybe im missing something? (Fuck that!)
Sorry for a ll the swearing but it happens.

Minus my broken neck, I had a pretty good week last week. I signed a sick track from S4MCRO, got some new bits from Stickbubbly and had an online feature in the famous Knowledge magazine (KMAG)
It’s awesome seeing Such Music on the front page of Kmag’s website.
Check out the article here and let me know what you think. I sense big things to come. And big thanks to Kmag for the support!

This has to be my favorite Utah Jazz song. Off his debut Album “Its a Jazz Thing” “The Only One” combines beautiful vocals, deep pumping bass and rolling drums into a Utah Jazz Master piece. This is classic Liquid DnB !
Sit back and enjoy!

Up, up, down, up.
It’s been quiet since Friday and here’s why.
UP
Such Music had a massive week last week with our first release SM001 and my first gig in LA @Respect featuring the legend Utah Jazz!
The show was amazing. I opened the night and the crowd seemed to really enjoy it. I got to test out some new Such Music dubs and upcoming releases. Everything went off great!!
Next up was Scooba who played an awesome set more on the liquid tip prepping the crowd for the “soul prince,” Utah Jazz. Sick set Scooba!
Then the legend Luke “Utah Jazz” stepped up to the decks. Utah brought his classic soul sound with tight mixing an incredible vibe! The dance floor was packed and loving it! Too much Vodka for me made the end of the night a bit blurry for me (lol), but it was still an incredible night of music. Big thanks to Rob Machete and the RESPECT crew for having me out! And shout out to Kemst for holding the MIC down proper!
UP
I Woke up Friday morning feeling good, a little hung over but happy! The plan was to go to Zuma beach and enjoy my upcoming four-day weekend (majorly needed). The four of us — Candice (wife), Kari (sister-in-law) Luke (Utah Jazz) and myself — piled into the car and headed north to Zuma. It was my first beach day of the year and we were all loving life. Luke and I got into the water and were enjoying the waves, which were a good size. I ran out, grabbed my boogie board and caught a few waves (Beautiful).
Down
I saw a big wave coming and caught it a little late. The wave broke on me and smashed me into the sand. I knew something was wrong but luckily I could stand. I crawled out of the water and collapsed on the sand. Luke came over and asked if I was ok, I said I needed a few minutes. I got up and we went over to the girls. I wasn’t sure what was wrong but my neck was killing and my hand was numb. Candice insisted we go see the lifeguards (always listen to your wife). As soon as we saw them they stabilized my neck and called an ambulance. All I could think about is I ruined our beautiful day on the beach. We got to the hospital and we were all joking around. I was 100% sure all I had was whiplash. I Did a CT scan, the operator came back in and said “There is an issue, do not move your head or neck”. Everything changed at this point (no more jokes). The doctor told me I had fractured my C7 vertebrae in my neck. They needed to do an MRI to see if emergency surgery was needed. Shit got real fast. I did the MRI and waited for about 1.5 hours until the doctor gave the news. This was one of the longest 1.5 hrs in my life. Luckily, Candice, Kari and Luke were at my side the whole time. They are the best and I couldn’t have been more grateful having them there. The doctor came in and said “ I spoke with the neurosurgeon and you are a very lucky man.” “No bruising, swelling or nerve damage”. What a fucking relief! We all were so happy and grateful for the news.
Up
To think about what could have happened is a terrifying thought. All I can think about is how grateful I am that I could walk out of there with only a neck brace and a vicodin prescription.
Whoever is up there, (angels, God, inter-dimensional beings) thank you! I love you long time!!
I’m good now, tired and can’t move my head much but damn good!
Life changes in a split second. So when you hear people say enjoy it while you can, they most likely have had a similar experience or worse.
Love you all and thanks for the continued support.

So I’m starting a few ongoing blog topics. This series is called “From the cradle to the Rave.” Here I’ll share small stories about my early raving years (before “EDM” or whatever the fuck it's called now).
So let’s start at the beginning:
My first rave was actually delayed considering I’d been listening to jungle/DnB for a couple years already. Then on September 7th, 1996 (my 16th B-Day) came “Ground Zero,” Syrous’ 3rd year anniversary. For people that aren't familiar with Syrous, they were the first major jungle/DnB promoters in Toronto. Funny enough I would end up working for them a few years later, but that’s another post.
After having a wonderful dinner with my family, I went to my friend Twink’s house to get ready. We had a ritual before raving called OC (Over Cologne). We did this so we wouldn’t end up being one of those ravers at the party who reeked of BO (you know who you are, take a shower!). So after our OC we got our pre-rolls ready and then we hopped into my buddy Larse’s famous old Sab (I think he drove).
I remember calling the info line to find out where the rave was (yes that's what you did back then). The rave ended up being in an empty flea market in Toronto's West End and the party was nuts: Andy C , Darren J, Stevie Hyper D and special guest: MCMC. What a night! Hearing and feeling the song “Truly One's” bassline rocked my core . I'd never heard bass like that before — it practically picked me up and threw my little 16 year old body across the flea market. This bass changed me. It was one of those defining moments for me, the kind you remember (unless you forget). AND, it's still the best Mcing I have ever seen. Stevie Hyper D and MCMC worked together on the mic like they were one person. I remember watching them with Andy C in the background (looking the same age as I was) and thinking this is the fucking coolest thing I’ve ever seen (fuck concerts, I’m a raver). Little did I know, 17 years later I’d still be balls deep in drum and bass. Needless to say, I’m still crushed there was no tape recording from that party.
That night I burned out a little early. I remember Stickbubbly waking me up in some weird room in the flea market (lol). Unfortunately this was one of the last true underground raves (at least for dnb), but I’m still grateful I was able to experience that type of party where there was this amazing feeling of community. It’s something I’ve rarely felt at any other rave, club or EDM dubstep trap hipster party since.
Thanks Syrous!!
Introducing Such Music
Welcome to Such Music, friends, family, artists, humanoids and bots.
If you haven’t figured it out already, we’re a new digital record label focusing on drum and bass (for now!). In other words, from Such Music you will hear BASS, DRUMS and lots of other interesting shit.
It’s an interesting time for music and starting a record label. Mainly because people are not buying music like they used to (cheap asses – lol). Why is that? Many reasons, if you’re interested you can read a book about it or I hear this Internet thing is really taking off.
So why am I starting Such Music?
Because I believe in what music can do. And one of things I believe it must do is create emotion. It doesn’t matter what type (happy, sad, hungry, horny, more horny), but it’s got to make you feel.
After emotion, you need quality. From song structure, to production precision, to the overall finished product, each track must maintain a high level of quality control.
So stick around. Join our mailing list, follow my blog posts and our social media to stay up to date on the music we’ll be bringing you.
A huge thanks to all those who have been supporting us thus far! We’re excited to show you what we’ve been stashing under our sleeves (in the form of DRUMS and BASS).
And if you’d like to send through some thoughts, questions or bitching we’d love to hear from you in the comments or you can also contact us through the side panel on our homepage.
Love
Toomas
